We bought our home in 2016 and started renovating relatively fast. When we first walked through our home my Dad said, "I would not buy that house." It was completely run down and smelt of cat urine and basically any foul odor you can imagine. But we took a leap of faith and we bought it. It was also our only option to get into the area in Boston that we wanted. But boy did we have our work cut out for us. We are still updating it and it is now 2020. We tried our best to maintain a budget but still managed to complete our home the way we wanted. I would say if you really plan on renovating, go for it! It will add value to your home and allow you to make it just the way you want. Make sure you take your time, no need to rush. Really figure out what you want and what is most important to you.
We get asked a lot about the beams in our house. Only half of them were there and they were a dark wood. My husband decided we should paint them black, I was NOT a fan! But despite my best efforts to stop him, we painted them black. We also decided that after we opened up that wall we would continue the beams across the whole room instead of just ending where the living room was. The black has totally grown on me and I'm so glad we did it!
Tips for Renovation
*Figure out what you really want and splurge on that. What can you not live without and what can you.
*Appliances are tough because unfortunately this day and age they don't have a long shelf life so you will no matter what be replacing them sooner rather than later.
*The quotes we got for painting were crazy expensive, if you can do it on your own, huge money saver.
*I always go neutral and light for paint colors because you can always spice it up with decor that isn't permanent.
*We went cheaper on our cabinets and they started to fall apart pretty quickly, make sure you get good quality cabinets, don't cheap out!
*I Love that we did dark hard woods, would totally recommend! Also would highly recommend doing high gloss as well!
